We can fix it.<\/em>\u00a0Indeed, if this description of Facebook\u2019s latest actions is accurate, it should be cause for concern among all web content producers.<\/p>\n<p>After all,\u00a0Gaslighting, according to Wikipedia (emphasis mine):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Gaslighting\u00a0is a form of\u00a0psychological abuse\u00a0<strong>in which false information is presented<\/strong>\u00a0with the intent of making a victim doubt his or her own\u00a0memory\u00a0and\u00a0perception. It may simply be the\u00a0denial\u00a0by an abuser that previous abusive incidents ever occurred, or\u00a0<strong>it could be the staging of bizarre events by the abuser with the intention of\u00a0disorienting\u00a0the victim<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The term \u201cgaslighting\u201d comes from the play<em>Gas Light<\/em>\u00a0and its film adaptations. In those works a character uses a variety of tricks, including turning the\u00a0gas lamps\u00a0lower than normal, to convince his spouse that she is crazy. Since then it became a\u00a0colloquial expression\u00a0which has now also been used in clinical and research literature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u2026gaslighting can be \u2018a very complex, highly structured configuration<\/strong>\u00a0which encompasses contributions from many elements of the psychic apparatus\u2019.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The trends Anil presents about Facebook are clear. I invite you to read the whole post linked in the first paragraph, but the one which irks me the most has to be when you\u2019re in Facebook, click an external link and are presented with a dialog box like similar to the following:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To quote Anil\u2019s comment about this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What\u2019s remarkable about this warning message is not merely that an ordinary, simple web content page is being presented as a danger to a user. No, it\u2019s far worse:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Facebook is warning its users about the safety of a page which\u00a0<strong>incorporates Facebook\u2019s own commenting features<\/strong>, meaning even web sites that embrace Facebook\u2019s technologies can be marginalized<\/li>\n<li>Facebook is displaying this warning\u00a0<strong>despite the fact that Facebook\u2019s own systems have indexed the page<\/strong>\u00a0and found that it incorporates their own Open Graph information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>With this action, Facebook is basically saying: Facebook = safe, the rest of the web = dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>The hypocrisy is stunning considering previous data\u00a0has shown\u00a0Facebook attracts more phishing attacks than Google and the IRS and it is a regular story that Facebook has been\u00a0hacked \/spammed.<\/p>\n<p>Can you imagine if every web service, content producer or email client presented you with such warnings before clicking links? You wouldn\u2019t stand for it. But in Facebook you do, because to leave Facebook is for many to remove themselves from all their social connections.<\/p>\n<p>Content producers need to stand up for themselves. Facebook\u2019s actions communicate very clearly how they view its users: as clueless and defenseless. Although, as\u00a0users are Facebook\u2019s product, not its customer, this may not be far from the truth.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not so much Facebook treating its users as cattle that bothers me. It\u2019s more the fact that Facebook is conditioning the average user to view their network as a safe-haven and the rest of the web as a \u201cdangerous\u201d and \u201cscary\u201d place. It\u2019s not only false, it\u2019s harmful (and hostile) to the rest of the digital ecosystem, made up of many who openly market Facebook and their products.<\/p>\n<p>My request to Facebook: work\u00a0<em>with<\/em>\u00a0the open web, don\u2019t demonize it.
