We have been writing\u00a0for years\u00a0that\u00a0every company is a media company. And yet while it\u2019s been a painfully obvious truth for many of us, plenty of people are just now waking up to this reality.<\/p>\n
There are\u00a0several\u00a0stories\u00a0floating around the web about the Tesla \/ NYT back and forth saying \u201ceveryone is a media company\u00a0now<\/strong>\u201d (emphasis mine). But really it\u2019s been this way since the ability to publish content digitally existed. The funny part of all this buzz is that many of the same media outlets and pundits I\u2019ve seen sharing this story are the same people who\u00a0declared self-publishing dead\u00a0in the past.<\/p>\n And yet<\/em>. This example proves once again that a self-hosted platform on a company or\u00a0independently-owned domain is the most powerful response mechanism. It\u2019s\u00a0platform agnostic, meaning that media of all types (social, professional and otherwise) can link and react to it. Not true in walled gardens which\u00a0lack the same flexibility\u00a0and benefits. In fact, more people spending more times in macro social sites\u00a0increases the value<\/strong>\u00a0of this type of independent publishing.<\/p>\n The stream is frequently a problem in search of a solution (something to point at). Media of all types have become a threaded, linked conversation with parties on all sides participating. But the best play to build a community and brand that people react to is still to self-publish.\u00a0This isn\u2019t a new trend and in fact how intelligent brands, professionals and journalists have been interacting for the last decade. You\u2019ve either built a team around this and embraced being a publisher or you have not. I\u2019m also not saying to abandon platforms, I am saying it is \u201cand\u201d not \u201cor.\u201d You need both despite many companies thinking it\u2019s a good idea to\u00a0yield their presence to the stream\u00a0(it\u2019s not as yet another\u00a0recent example\u00a0proves).<\/p>\n As we\u2019ve said before (and continue to say): self-publishing gets no love,\u00a0but you shouldn\u2019t care.
