{"id":899,"date":"2023-03-10T02:12:16","date_gmt":"2023-03-10T02:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bursucretleri.com\/blog\/?p=899"},"modified":"2023-03-23T08:55:25","modified_gmt":"2023-03-23T08:55:25","slug":"do-you-have-a-marketing-plan-for-yourself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bursucretleri.com\/blog\/do-you-have-a-marketing-plan-for-yourself\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Have A Marketing Plan For Yourself?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Today\u2019s post is directed to communications professionals specifically, but can potentially benefit anyone who is able to share their work\/ideas in a digital format.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You spend all day marketing (in some form or another):<\/p>\n<p>a)\u00a0 In-house for a large or small business<\/p>\n<p>b)\u00a0 At a firm or external marketing agency with various clients.<\/p>\n<p>Either way you spend all day marketing, and you\u2019re obviously passionate about it as that is what you devote a majority of your conscious hours to.<\/p>\n<p>So this brings us to what I want to call you out on.\u00a0 You have developed these wonderful skills to help others get the word out about their products, businesses and executives \u2013 which is great.\u00a0 But do you use those same skills for yourself?\u00a0 If not, here is your wake up call.<\/p>\n<p>I know you are busy, but honestly it makes little sense to work so hard for others and not bother to do the same things for yourself.\u00a0 As Jeremiah Owyang sagely advises,\u00a0you are a company of one.\u00a0 If you are in any type of marketing, your best case study and perhaps most valuable use of your skills is figuring out a way to successfully market yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Some think marketing yourself is what you do when you need a new job, but in fact that\u2019s not the case at all \u2013 it\u2019s actually about having a voice in our industry, creating a name and reputation for yourself, and shaping the future.\u00a0 Also, there is a\u00a0symbiotic relationship\u00a0between any company you work for and your personal brand.\u00a0 Smart companies embrace this behavior because they understand the value in nurturing talent.\u00a0 Ideally, all parties win.<\/p>\n<p>Take on marketing yourself as your personal challenge and an ongoing project with no end date.\u00a0 If you were an interior designer, would you hire someone else to furnish your house?\u00a0 I doubt it, what would that say about your skills as a designer?\u00a0 An interior designer\u2019s proudest work should be their own interior, just as you should be your own personal case study of success.<\/p>\n<p>Not convinced yet?\u00a0 Think about the following:<\/p>\n<p><strong>No one else is going to do this for you<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t take control of your own image, you essentially yield that to the world to decide for you \u2013 for better or for worse.\u00a0 And they\u2019ll never portray you as accurately as you can represent yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The future isn\u2019t tell me, it\u2019s show me<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have written before\u00a0your resume is meaningless (and building career security, not job security).\u00a0 We are building a semantic world, and not directly tying yourself to your accomplishments and putting them in a public, linkable format\u00a0 for the world to see is a mistake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A google-juiced blog along with a following is powerful for dedicated professionals in all fields<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve previously written that\u00a0every marketing and PR pro should be blogging.\u00a0 You can re-read that post on the reasons why, but it\u2019s 2009 \u2013 if you aren\u2019t sold by now, you might not ever be.\u00a0 If you do decide to jump in here\u2019s some advice for\u00a0how to successfully integrate blogging into your life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is no power in remaining silent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By not blogging, by not making yourself available for quotes in industry trade publications, by not talking shop with your peers, by not writing by-lined articles for influential publications and blogs, by not being in charge of your personal PR, you are essentially invisible.\u00a0 If you see the power in what you are doing for others, how can ignore doing it for yourself?\u00a0 Remember Robert Greene\u2019s\u00a048 laws of power?\u00a0 Law 6, once again:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Everything is judged by its appearance; what is unseen counts for nothing.\u00a0Never let yourself get lost in the crowd, then, or buried in oblivion.\u00a0Stand out.\u00a0Be conspicuous, at all cost.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Got ideas?\u00a0 Share them with the industry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I know a lot of people are hesitant about giving out their ideas or providing direction to others \u2013 but guess what \u2013 if you don\u2019t, you just succeed in letting others establish themselves as the go-to person and you are left as the unknown.\u00a0 Plus it is enjoyable to mentor others and contribute what you know to your industry.\u00a0 Something perhaps even more fulfilling than seeing your own campaigns succeed is seeing the campaigns of someone you inspired succeed.\u00a0 I believe heavily in giving back and have no problem sharing ideas with peers or letting others bounce ideas off me, and am always\u00a0open for discussion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal branding gives you an edge over your competition<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest \u2013 the marketing\/PR world is cutthroat.\u00a0 You really need to stand out from your peers if you want to go far in your career.\u00a0 And as I wrote previously in\u00a0the rise of personal branding, the web let\u2019s us see in black and white who is dedicated, talented and serious about their craft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The real trick isn\u2019t to make it about you<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a hint:\u00a0 market others, share their content, put them in the spotlight \u2013 don\u2019t even worry about directly promoting yourself.\u00a0 The smartest way to market yourself is actually to make it not about you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Okay, you\u2019re the communications professional \u2013 I\u2019ll let you create your own strategy and path you plan to follow.\u00a0 Hopefully you\u2019ll also join the dialogue of our industry if you have not already.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related posts from The Future Buzz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>10 Reasons Why Organizations (And Individuals) With Audiences Win<\/p>\n<p>Shouldn\u2019t SEOs Rank Well?
